RE: *Member* Olstars 1989 Volkswagen Caddy
cool man, let me know.

im starting to get quite worried about the water inside the caddy..

you cant swim in it, but there is ALWAYS condensation inside the window.. and lots of it!

also, my ret old sterio has ONE wire coming off the back of it.... and scott says the other wire off the opriginal speaker would of been earthed to teh car?

how can i make this one wire attach to phono input on my amp? and still work?

just order some new window rubbers and that should stop any condensation, ste may be able to get u some and there easy enough to fit.

there's lots of holes for him to sort out yet d, once that's done......

scott could well be right, but don't worry, that's not a big problem. lets worry about making the car run first.

yes ok Icon_smile

was discussing it last night so thought id mention it on here Icon_smile

yes i have a hole in the bulkhead where the wiring loom should of come through.. then one on the other side where it does come from..

i could do with new window rubbers actually, cos someones cut a chunk out where they have fitted a mirror in the past

Think its called a "floating" speaker system and you don't see it in modern cars. As for connecting it to your amp your gonna need a high to low level converter as your stereo outputs an amplified signal to the speakers, this needs converting to a low level signal to be input to your amp. Converters are available on eBay nice and cheap here.
Not sure what the system will sound like though quality wise.
It should work if you connect your one wire to the + input on the converter and attach the - to the chassis. That is if your cars chassis is connected to the negative terminal on the battery. Some older cars were the other way round with the positive being the common using the car to supply the power with individual earths going back to the negative on the battery. Similar to PNP or NPN in electrical systems, negative or positive switching.

Also if theres only one wire then you only have a mono signal so will need to bridge the connections on the input side of the converter, + to + and - to -. That will give you two signals coming out, although they will be the same.

Basically its a negative earth system on the Mk1/Caddy so a converter should work - not sure how that will sound though - might need an amp to make it worthwhile.
